Japhy´s Story: From Saudi to Spain

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Saudi Arabia, Japhy's futbol career has taken him across continents. After developing his game in Germany, he joined Cadiz CF's International Academy, where he was training full-time, competing against professional clubs and soon his performances and leadership qualities earned him the captain's armband.

Despite thriving in the international academy environment and being surrounded by quality coaching, Japhy found himself frustrated by what was missing—real competition. With Japhy turning 18 and approached his final year of youth futbol, he had a decision to make. Stay in the safety net of an international academy program or risk trying to pursue a playing opportunity at a federated club in Spanish league system.

Taking a Leap of Faith

Through Spanish Soccer Trials' Summer Showcase in Malaga, Japhy was evaluated on what most trials ignore—not just technical ability, but readiness to compete at Spain's federated club level. The kind of readiness that only comes from honest self-assessment and understanding what real competition actually demands.. Once we had confirmed it was a risk that he was willing to take, what followed was strategic steps in order to identify a suitable placement. Marbella FC, competing in Primera RFEF (Spain's third division), offered exactly that opportunity at the Juvenil B level. This meant Japhy would now be competing for a spot with some of the best youth players in southern Spain looking to make a name for himself and take the next step in his career and development. After receiving international clearance and his official players license, Japhy is now competing weekly in Spain's official federated leagues—a massive jump from non-federated academy play. He's training alongside players who've spent their entire careers in top Spanish academies, facing the intensity and tactical demands that only real competition provides.

The challenges ahead are real. Language barriers, cultural adaptation, performance pressure, fighting for minutes against players who know the Spanish system inside out. But that's exactly the point. This is where development happens—in the grind of weekly competitive matches where everything matters.

You can have the best technical sessions in the world with top-level coaches. You can develop in academies that promise professional pathways. But to learn to ´compete´ is something critical that gets lost in all the noise about football development: training is important, but competing is essential.
