Spanish Soccer Trials is proud to announce the appointment of Sergio Matez as our new Head of Player Placement, with immediate effect.
It is a significant moment for SST. Sergio, full name Sergi Maté Fuente, is a UEFA Pro licensed coach with a career built entirely within Spanish football. He brings with him a depth of knowledge, a network of club relationships, and a philosophy that aligns with everything SST stands for. His appointment strengthens our operation at every level.
A Career Built Across Andalusian Football
Sergio's journey in football began at CD Puerto Malagueño, one of the strongest grassroots clubs in the province of Málaga and a name well known to anyone with ties to football in this part of Spain. It was there that his coaching career took its first steps, and it did not take long for the wider game to take notice.
The first professional club to identify his potential was UD Almería, a relationship Sergio speaks about with genuine gratitude. From that point, his career gathered real momentum. He went on to work across youth and senior structures at some of the most respected clubs in Andalusian football, including Marbella FC, Atleti Fuengirola, CD Mijas, and Rincón CF in Tercera RFEF, as well as gaining experience at Liga Nacional and División de Honor level across various youth setups.
Most recently, his journey brought him to Málaga CF, adding another significant chapter to a career that has consistently operated at the sharp end of Spanish football.
This is not a CV built on titles alone. It is one built on real, lived experience across the full spectrum of the Spanish game: from grassroots development through to the semi-professional and professional levels.
Why Sergio Chose SST
What is notable about Sergio's appointment is not just what he brings to SST, but why he chose to be part of it. In his own words:
"The reason I decided to work with SST is because, above everything else, this is a serious organisation. These are professionals who don't just work in football, they live it personally. They care about it deeply. When we evaluate a player, we don't look at them in isolation. We look at the full picture: their videos, their competitive history, whether they have experience in federated football or come from a university or academy environment. Every detail is examined. Every variable is considered. No two players are treated the same. I can say, and I will always say, that for me this is a serious organisation with people who genuinely love football. Ultimately what you want is to work with people who are as passionate about it as you are. This is a vocation. We are football obsessives."
That last point matters. Sergio did not choose SST because of a job offer. He chose it because of what SST is, and that alignment of values is exactly why this appointment made sense for both sides.
What This Means for SST
Sergio's role as Head of Player Placement puts one of the most experienced football minds in Andalusia at the centre of our placement operation. He will be responsible for identifying the right opportunities for our players across every level of the Spanish football pyramid, from youth academy structures through to senior and semi-professional clubs.
He will also play a central role in continuing to expand and deepen SST's club network across Spain; relationships that are the foundation of everything we do and the reason our players access opportunities that simply are not available anywhere else.
The process Sergio has described is the process SST has always believed in. Detailed, thorough, and built around the individual. Every player assessed on their own merits. Every opportunity matched with the right profile. No shortcuts, no guesswork.
With Sergio now leading that work, SST enters a new chapter with greater expertise, greater reach, and greater capability to deliver for our players than ever before.
Bienvenido al equipo, Sergio 🤝🔵⚽
